A world renowned folk singer and social activist, one of his major achievements was cleaning up the Hudson River. Seeger and his wife Toshi organized the construction of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater which played an important role in the passage of laws to clean up the entire nations waters. In 1972 Seeger and the Clearwater crew sailed the sloop to Washington, DC and personally delivered a petition - with hundreds of thousands of signatures, and then led people singing in the halls of Congress. That same year the Federal Water Pollution Control Act was passed over Nixons veto. The Clearwater is still sailing, and proceeds of this concert will be donated to support continued sailings, hopefully keeping our river clean. Ten years ago, at the age of 90, Seeger strolled down Depew Avenue, banjo on his back, and played at a health rally at what is now Skateboard Park. In 1994 Seeger was awarded the National Medal of Arts from the National Endowment for the Arts. This celebration will acquaint people with his songs, his ideals, his impact, and hopefully his spirit, with some of the best musicians in Rockland playing with great skill and heart. |
